Just took it for a drive - even with 400hp, I was less than impressed. I wasn't expecting to be wowed, as I was with the new Vette, and my expectations weren't far off. It's a decent sports car for $30k, but the gearing was less than optimum for spirited driving, and it in NO way upholds the good looks of the '60s Goats. Anyone else care to throw in their 2 cents?

IMO its overrated, sure it has gobs of power, but a vette will toss that all day long...even with rear leaf springs...Zip it! [:#]
not always about the power, its how you get it down...even the 911 has less power than the vette by a good amount and it's only tenths slower and handling wise the same in most respects if not better

I'll agree on the overrated part 100%Yes [Y], I thought they just changed the name of the two door Gran Prix. lol

In regards to the vette, I'm pretty sure they did away with rear leaf springs a long time ago.  I'm sure I'll corrected if I'm wrong on that.  But compared to a 911......... please.  Sounds like "Car and Driver" hogwash to me.  The stock ZO6 will crush a stock 911 in speed and acceleration any day.  And probably beat its but in the skid pad as well.  You want to compare an independent rear suspension to a rear engine car?  Yes rear, not mid engine.  The 911 isn't the fastest or best handeling out of the Porsches, leave that to a front engine model.  Sorry 911 guys, you paid for the name Crying [:'(].  Not to mention its toy size.

Just trying to create some posts here to get things rollin along for the site.

Take care,

aiighty guys....if you want to duke out a vette vs 911, start a new thread about that. I'm sure it will bring lots of hot discussion, as I've been over this comparison with clients a decent amount.

however, they did bring back the leaf springs, to quote from Top Gear: "Transverse-mounted leaf springs are still the order of the day, but suspension travel has been increased"

Regarding the GTO, you hit the nail on the head. definitely the Mustang GT of general motors, wrapped in a gran prix body.

agreed on the Z06 crushing the 911 for sure...no argument there, as for the regular corvette even with the z51 package the 911 can hold its ground quite well...but i dont think id every buy one...so much better performance available for that kind of money
and as for the leaf springs...yes it's hard to believe such an archaic technology would be used in a car nowadays especially one pulling 0.98g on a skidpad but sure enough check out two sites...

its actually funny but during a quick glance through chevy's website i couldnt easily find the suspension components...wonder if they are tryin to hide it just a little bit

First I want to apologize to Doug about highjacking this thread before, but I'm doing it again.  I stand corrected, the vette does use a transverse leaf spring, but from the short amout of research I've done thus far, they also utilize rear coil overs in the rear also.  Anyways, thats it.

Pontiac just keep making mistakes like that and you'll become Oldsmobile.  Where are they now?

yep....pontiac already had to discontinue the transam, I have a feeling the GTO will be next.

don't worry about hijacking the thread, I posted a new discussion in comparisons section if you want to discuss the vette vs. 997 issue. To make it fair, a stock C6 vs a 997 is a better comparison.

Doug, did you try any of this?  Might change your mind about the GTO.

Let's just say this - when I got back to the dealer, the salesman said he didn't need to go to Cedar Point this summer.

True, it can be set up to be a good drift car, and I'm definitely into drifting (and Bondurant uses GTOs for their drifiting school), but for half the price you could have a 240sx silvia turbo, which is a MUCH better drift car, and you'd smoke a GTO.

Biggest drawback to the GTO drifting wise is the excessive weight. American cars should stay going in straight lines.

When a base european sports sedan can outperform a so called american muscle car, it doesn't say much.

Top Gear had some nasty things to say about the GTO, it really didn't even keep up with the competition they racked it up against.

anything Top Gear says about an american car can be automatically thrown in the can, as they are stupidly biased against anything we produce.

I would like to know the price difference between the GTO and the comparison car.  I personally think the GTO is crap with a motor, but I can pretty much guarantee I could spend the difference on after market goodies and destroy this car.  More so I’d be interested in hearing about the GTO European counterpart spoken of, so I can disprove its claim of superiority.  But for the record I would never own a GTO (new or old).

Rhys Millen seems to be doing quite well with his GTO in Formula D. Then again, he has great skill and would probably do just as well in a 240

I have to butt in on this one. The new GTO is a great car in its segment. I was very pleased with this car and excited that a touring coupe worthy of the title had an american badge. Yes it is a little heavy, but it has a V8. I am very impressed and like its chances with the competion. Great performance alternative for a take the family, run to a business meeting car. This is a daily fun car, not a toy. Its low profile looks add to the professional look that can be accomplished. -Jon
