Vette: $54,240, 4.1 sec. 0-60mph, 12.6 sec. 1/4 mile, 186mph top speed, 164ft. 70-0mph, 0.98g's

997: $76,195, 4.3 sec. 0-60mph, 12.8 sec. 1/4 mile, 181mph top speed, 150ft. 70-0mph, 0.97g's

I personally think it is a no brainer, but if you have the funds for this 997 or a more expensive version in the 2006 911 line up, you are buying an image.  Spend enough money and you'll beat a vette, but that really is comparing apples to apples.  For a couple of grand you can drop in a Gale Banks twin turbo set-up, upgrade the suspension and brakes and beat the pants off of any factory 997 for less money.  But here again the Porsche comes with a higher class image.  Like any product in the world, do you like the name or performance?

Unfortunately the vette doesn't fall under GM's June 15% discount sale.

Jim

Those Porsche numbers are the Carrera S also, are they not? The 6spd is a hair slower even.

as far as the 15% discount goes.....who needs a discount when you have switchcars.com? If you have the right connections you can pick up a Vette for GM discount.

Albeit, the new 997 is an amazing piece of engineering, and a fabulous driver compared to the 996. But bang for the buck = Vette.

How about the European engineers (mainly German) who now work for the big three American companies?  European cars have a ton of engineering put into them, but sometimes it is too much. I personally know people who work for Porsche and VW and have heard about their problems.  It is just easier for them to hide the problems behind their names.  OR I can talk about my friend from Germany who came here for school, and took a new corvette home with him because of its superior AutoBahn performance.  And yes he likes it better than his 7 series BMW.  I personally can not vouch for Porsche or BMW, because I would never justify paying that price for one and have never owned one, so maybe they are worth their weight in metal.  VW’s suck, and I can say I have owned my share.

dollar for dollar, every bias aside, you're getting more for your money with the Vette. HOWEVER, if you want a true 2+2, or the handling of a rear engine car, or the classic porsche lines, go with the Porsche. It really comes down to how much money you want to spend, and what is important to you in a car.

A new convertible Vette, vs a 997.... That was my dilema.  2 months ago I decided I needed a "functional" back seat and got a new M3 Convertible 6 speed and haven't looked back.  Thanks Doug on the find.

A topic dear to my wallet...A few years ago I owned a C5 into which I droped a 383 stroker, McCleod clutch, short throw shifter, coil overs, upgraded engine mgt, intake, headers, exhaust, wheels and other upgrades. The car dynoed 464 rwtq and 446 rwhp. I had bought the car off a dealer lot for $27K with 23K miles on it and spent about $25K on the upgrades. The car was a monster producing performance numbers close to the new Z06 at the dragstrip. At the same time I picked up a used 996 Carrera for about $43K, put on a sports exhaust and owned both for some time. Which was better? performance-wise, there was no comparison. The vette was way superior. The only nod to the Porsche was in terms of daily driving; it was a more agile in traffic. The interiors of both cars fell short of my expectations. Some time later I decided I needed a car for long trips, a real GT type car to travel with my SO or one of my sons. I wound up trading in both those cars for a Maserati Coupe with F1 shifters. I wound up using it for just that, and on different occasions I drove from Miami to the Canadian border, from Miami to the Porsche Driving School in Alabama and to the Corvette 50th Anniversary celebration in Nashville & Bowling Green. The Maser was excellent for that sort of driving, providing a much better cabin than either Porsche or a vette, an excellent V8 and the paddle shifters that are nice for touring. Last year I bought a '74 Maser Merak and ran out of garage space. I needed a daily driver with decent performance that would be fun to drive on occasional trips. The Maser coupe was not a good daily driver (the paddle shifters are terrible in stop and go traffic). I had been using a Boxster S for daily driving and it fell short of the power I was looking for. So I was back in the market after the C6 and 997 had been launched and it was time to consider both (among other alternatives including the new M5, Viper, Z06 that was just being released, etc). The C6 vette is tremendously improved over the C5 in terms of interior finish making it a more pleasant place to drive a long haul. I like the tightened looks as well, and the improved performance is great too. Porsche makes more money as a % of each unit sold than any car company, and my guess is they make more on each 911 sold than any other platform in their line up (again my guess is they make over $10K per base 911 sold). Porsche also has huge mark ups on their factory installed and post-sale accessories. I have nothing against a manufacturer making a nice margin on a product, the point here being that you definitely pay premium for a Porsche. The Corvette is by far a better "deal". Having said all of that, which did I buy? As you might have guessed by my question, I bought a 997, an S with the chrono package. Why? I prefer the Porsche's interior (dash layout, instruments, seats, factory short shifter, $895 sport steering wheel- Ouch!-) ergonomics, and driving dynamics. I would rather go cross country on twisty roads in the 911 than a C6. I would rather drive through traffic everyday in my 911 than a vette. Lastly I appreciate the service my dealer (The Collection) provides versus any Chevy dealer near me in Miami (We happen to own a Chevy conversion van and have wound up taking it to a GMC dealer becuase nearby Chevy service is terrible). BTW I recommend stopping by The Collection if you visit Miami regardless of what car you like...the place borders on being a museum for modern autos as an Aston/Ferrari/Maser/Porsche/Lotus/Jag/Audi dealer. I know full well a Z06 and base C6 would be a blast and would be better cars for the dragstrip, but the Porsche does what I need and does it well from a cabin I will enjoy more on longer trips. In fact, I'm writing this from Oneonta NY as we're now on a 2 week trip with the 997S that has taken us from Miami to Toronto and we are now reeling in curves around the Adirondack mountains. Steve

Welcome Steve! You're right, the Collection is a good dealership, I've done some business with them in the past. Congrats on the new 997, I hope in the future you'll consider us for your purchases, as you can tell we're running some crazy deals on 997s right now! Any pics of your car?
